Whenever you see that, understand that this doesn’t mean they were already on death’s doorstep. Just one of the pre-existing conditions (EVER having had high blood pressure) is cited as covering roughly 80% of those over 70, and over a third of all adults in the US. Not exactly what we think of when we hear that phrase.

It’s also a different population than those who typically die from flu, as normally high blood pressure does not make one particularly vulnerable to the flu.

Of course we shouldn’t trivialize old people. But neither should old people insist that the entire country shut down just to keep them alive for a few more years. We are all under the curse of death. When you’re in your 80’s, your entire body becomes a pre-existing condition, and you become less able to fight-off sickness. Until Trump was elected, you didn’t have to be an MD to know that.
