'I know, but what do you want me to do?': Fauci's strikingly honest review of Trump's coronavirus response
thehour.com ^ | 3/23/20 | Aaron Blake

Posted on 03/24/2020 1:56:17 AM PDT by a little elbow grease

Dr. Anthony Fauci's interview with Science magazine began on an inauspicious note. Asked how he's doing right now, Fauci said he was "exhausted" but "good." "I mean, I'm not, to my knowledge, coronavirus-infected," he said, before adding with a laugh: "To my knowledge, I haven't been fired."

What followed were several exchanges that should help people take stock of President Donald Trump's response to the coronavirus. Repeatedly, Fauci tacitly and even openly admitted that comments made by the commander in chief are not true and are not in line with what the nation's leading infectious disease expert is advising.

The interviewer, Jon Cohen, asked whether Fauci would acknowledge that Trump says things he disagrees with, and Fauci seemed to grant the premise. Fauci maintained that, "I don't disagree on the substance" - but then added: "It is expressed in a way that I would not express it, because it could lead to some misunderstanding about what the facts are about a given subject."

The exchange highlights the mixed messages the country has been getting in recent days, in particular, about the promise of certain drugs to treat coronavirus. While Fauci has warned that evidence of the drugs' effectiveness is "anecdotal" and that there is no "magic drug" to treat coronavirus, Trump said Friday that he "disagreed" with Fauci, at least in part, and has repeatedly hailed a malaria drug in particular as a possible "game-changer."

Asked about the White House holding crowded events like a Rose Garden news conference in which Trump was shaking hands with people, Fauci admitted he has repeatedly advised against it. "I keep saying, is there any way we can get a virtual news conference. Thus far, no," Fauci said. "I'm trying my best. I cannot do the impossible."

Not only does Fauci have a persecution complex he may be leaning toward a Napolean one too.

Bingo. I was thinking the same thing as I read the article. “I’m so smart. Why won’t anyone listen to me?!”

Fauci was way off on his projections for the aids virus.

Jan 14, 1986: https://www.nytimes.com/1986/01/14/science/aids-in-the-future-experts-say-deaths-will-climb-sharply.html

Dr. Anthony J. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, one of the Government’s top authorities on AIDS, said today that he believes, on the basis of very ‘’soft’’ estimates, that one million Americans have already been infected with the virus and that this number will jump to at least 2 million or 3 million within 5 to 10 years.

Actual North American Aids cases in 1991: 208,000 reported, 260,000 total estimated infected.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1845061/?from_term=Chin+J&from_cauthor_id=1845061&from_pos=1

(I didn’t find statistics from 1996, but below is cumulative total 1981 thru 2000)

As of December 31, 2000, 774,467 persons had been reported with AIDS in the United States; 448,060 of these had died; 3542 persons had unknown vital status. The number of persons living with AIDS (322,865)

“Fauci seemed upset that some old drug at the cost of an aspirin may be a substitute for a new and improved and very expensive “drug”.”

While I have not heard him speak specifically, given that he is a creature of the institution, I would expect him to support very expensive, highly bureaucratized way of testing a substance’s efficacy that is drawn out over many many years. Many discoveries happen by accident (e.g. penicillin) or the fact that a drug like Wellbutrin (to treat depression) can be used for other things like weight loss. So the Dr here might be too intellectually or institutionally conditioned to consider the possibilities at a time when one doesn’t have the luxury of time.

On the other side of the coin is the anecdotal - how does one validate such claims so that the “cure” does not cause temporary, or serious or permanent injury / death, or at best waste of resource$? Snake oil salesmen have been around for a very long time, and have gotten wealthy. Then there will be the lawsuits. Fauci may be cautious by training. I can see where he disagrees with POTUS on such a specific issue; that isn’t a necessarily a bad thing.

Anyone who has ever advised someone knows that sometimes one has to step in to keep their boss from making a big error. The concern is where and when he should have the discussion with the POTUS. Not on live television as that is not his place in most cases, especially if they discussed this before behind closed doors.

We live in interesting times.

People are missing the big point here

President Trump was right and Fauci was wrong

There is plenty of clinical research going back over a decade to support President Trump’s assertion that there was an effective drug treatment using common, readily available FDA certified drugs.

Doctors didn't just pull this current quinine/antibiotic drug cocktail out of thin air, they were aware of previous research and combined the two drugs with intent -one to inhibit replication and another to block mobility across cell walls.

Apparently Fauci was was the uninformed one, not President Trump

Fauci misinformed the American people

He was wrong and Trump is right

He had ample opportunity to have his say with Trump and yet because he didn’t get his way his career in government is all but finished.
_______________

I wish.
************************************************************

I’ll rephrase.

Fauci is done in gov’t as long as Trump is President.

Whatever the complications are with Fauci, trying to reassure people and speaking in a strictly scientific way are going to conflict.

There is no need for there to be any conflict. When he speaks at the podium with this President he is NOT speaking to scientists as much as MILLIONS of everyday folks such as us. He can easily and in language we understand state his preference for the FDA way of detail testing to determine the efficacy of Chloroquine and the other medications actually being used NOW to treat the virus.

But he can and should have stated given the dire situation there are others ways this testing can be done to speed up the getting the necessary information and this makes the Presidents idea of using these already FDA approved medications possible at this time (That is after all what is actually happening)

There are real problems with Fauci's attitude, but the conflict would be there whoever held his job. Does it have to be so public? That's also a complicated question since a lot of Fauci's personal characteristics are shared by many other scientists and bureaucrats.

If he is so rigid that he cannot step outside his mindful superior scientific persona then he has no place being any part of the public face of this Administration in this case.

“Repeatedly, Fauci tacitly and even openly admitted that comments made by the commander in chief are not true and are not in line with what the nation’s leading infectious disease expert is advising.”

really? that’s their conclusion from Dr. Fauci’s statement that: “I don’t disagree on the substance”?

really, at this point, the fake stream enemedia seems to have shot off all it’s anti-Trump ammunition without hitting the target, and has now been reduced to stupid stuff like trying to once again gen up a “controversy” or “disagreement” between President Trump and one of his advisors ...

i guess no one here remembers that tactic by the fake stream enemedia in the early years of Trump’s Presidency, in which the fake stream enemedia screamed every day about fake “controversies” and “disagreements” between President Trump and whomever ... the fake stream enemedia has now resurrected that failed tactic in a desperate bid to find ANYTHING that they can attack President Trump with ...

I mean...seriously? Everyone thinks he/she should be President, instead of THE President.
