Q for anyone: Why is an antibiotic included in an antiviral cocktail? As a prophylaxis?
Just curious.
Why is an antibiotic included in an antiviral cocktail?
This particular antibiotic, azithromycin, works by blocking mRNA needed to make proteins. Mexican Beer Virus is an RNA virus, so the thought is that this drug blocks the viral RNA so the virus cant replicate. Similar actions by AIDS drugs and other anti-virals make them promising treatments, too.
I believe that it has anti-inflammatory properties so, in addition to fighting any opportunistic bacterial infections that may arise, it helps minimize the possibilities of damage from cytokines storm.

I posted the same question last week.
antibiotics and flu:
Antibiotics fight bacteria. Flu is much more tiny than bacteria. Indeed, flu attacks bacteria in addition to attacking the cells of advanced animals and plants. But, bacterial infections often occur when a person is dealing with a serious flu. Bacterial infections and other complications diminish the ability of the body to deal with the flu. So, you might be prescribed a drug cocktail that includes antibiotics as well as anti-viral components.
