The Trump administration, moving quickly to halt the spread of the coronavirus, is seriously considering grounding all passenger air traffic for up to 30 days, temporarily halting stock trading on Wall Street, and imposing a shelter-in-place rule, according to officials.
Key officials have begun alerting industry leaders, Capitol Hill, and agencies that the “radical” plan could come early next week if the warlike efforts to stop the spread of the virus fail.
On Thursday, the administration began to prepare the nation for 9/11-style moves when the State Department issued a “Level Four” warning against traveling overseas. The warning is the most severe that the department has.
In a notice, the State Department said Americans traveling abroad may find their travel “severely disrupted” and “may be forced to remain outside of the United States for an indefinite time frame.”

As for shutting it down, remember that there are probably millions of people retired who have their life savings invested and who rely on income from them.
If forced to sell a big chunk in order to have money to carry them over a shut down, they will be forced to sell in a depressed market.
Under the present circumstances, I am sure most opt to preserve their investment by drawing as little as possible and waiting for the market to improve, which it will when we get over this panic, for that is what it is.

I am in Thailand now. I never thought it would get so crazy this fast. I am cutting my trip short. It is Friday 03/20/20 at about 9:00am here now. The earliest flight I could get back is Sunday 03/22/20 morning.

I call BS. If the President would order all these things, he would not tell all those people in advance. That would just make these actions less effective and cause a lot more pain and problems than announcing them without warning. In addition it’s been discussed in a lot of places that the president does not have the power to declare a national “shelter in place” for a health issue - it’s a state power. Finally, if “key officials have begun alerting industry leaders, Capitol Hill, and agencies” wouldn’t we be hearing about this from a lot more sources than just this one.
