When I was a kid my Mom had a large garden in our huge backyard. Corn, tomatoes, green beans, onions and aother stuff. Every summer she fired up the canner and canned tomatoes and green beans and then in the fall she always made apple butter. We had a dozen Rhode Island Reds for eggs. I still have chickens and now garden in a raised bed and containers. We get a lot of veggies out of a small area.

We are beyond lucky here in california. We have several citrus trees and they are producing more oranges and grapefruits right now than we can use, so we are squeezing a lot and freezing the juice.

We also grow cherry tomatoes like crazy. We don’t even have to plant new ones from the nursery because they always reseed themselves. We’re blessed.

My grandmother had a huge victory garden during WWII and my mother carried on the garden tradition, so I grew up with fresh picked veggies in the summer and home made raspberry jam every day. Blessed to have had my family and their wonderful, self-sufficient traditions.
