The best explanation I have seen is that the virus in Italy in a mutation that attacks the(apparently) high number of Asians in the region with a strong infection. Some others have said that Italian medicine is not up to the task.

Another FReeper with an Asian sounding name reports that there are a high number of Chinese who work in the Milan leather industries. The outbreak began in a suburb town outside Milan. A lot go home over the holidays. My Chinese student renter arrived back on Jan. 27th. She walked in with a big smile and I think was going to give me a hug. I held up my hand and said stop when she was 8 feet away. She was very careful for the following 2 weeks. I read one report that authorities have been hiding that many of the dead in Italy are Chinese because they don’t want to trigger racist anti Chinese sentiment.
