Where am I wrong? The post implies that 38 dead out of 46 cases will extrapolate out forever.
Now the rest of the story...
The initial data from China showed similar sky high numbers.
It then dropped to much more reasonable numbers. That pattern repeated at several locations. I don't know why that happens, but I do know THAT it happens. Perhaps it's the more vulnerable have a quick outcome? Or maybe it's a fluke due to a thin data set? 46 completed cases in a country of 350,000,000? That's really not a statistically meaningful sample.
World wide, the deaths/completed cases has been hovering around 6%. That's high, but it's not so high as to be a civilization killer.
We'll get through this.
On February 21, 2020 Italy suffered its first Coronavirus death.
As of March 11, 2020 there are 1,016 deaths.
As of March 12 the total deaths in the U.S. is now 39. 28 of the deaths were from Washington state nursing homes.
That puts it all in perspective doesn’t it? Create an economic depression for the statistical noise of an upward limit of 5000 deaths.

You can’t even begin to get an accurate death rate until after you’ve done enough testing to have a reasonably accurate number of infected who did NOT die for the denominator.
We have not done anywhere remotely close to that much testing.
Denominator. I was a C math student but I stayed awake long enough to learn THAT much.

It would be helpful to analyze the demographics of the bunch of deaths in Italy. Are they mostly old and sick? It could be moist are, just as most of the deaths here are.

Absolutely. We need to speed up and beef up the wall using the billions $ that was just passed. Prevention is the best defense! This should be done as quickly as possible. Hire more contractors and get it done. Then start building a concrete barrier like Israel has right behind the existing slatted fence.
Ahh yes, the ‘one death is too many’ argument. So we see how the panic mongers cleverly start with “NUMBERS!!!” then switch to the argument from emotion when you debunk them.
BTW.... why are we always citing Italy? You know Germany had one of the first cases outside of Asia and they have had 3 deaths. Oh I know, 3 deaths are 3 too many. But why do we always cite Italy instead of Germany and Australia, and other countries? Because it doesn’t fit the panic narrative.

World wide influenza deaths - CDC annual estimate 291,000-646,000
World wide deaths due to mosquitoes - W.H.O. estimates over 1 million annually.
World wide Corona Virus deaths as of today - 5,822
Any illness should be treated with respect, but uninformed panic and hyperbole from the press does no one any good.
