On Wednesday night, a solemn President Trump spoke for less than ten minutes to tell Americans what steps the federal government has taken and will take to address the spread of coronavirus around the world. These steps include stopping all travel from Europe, payroll tax relief, small business loans, and aide for American workers who become sick or must care for someone who is sick.
Although it was not a flowery speech, Trump reminded Americans that health crises are a fact of life. What matters is how one responds. In the face of the panic sweeping America, Trump promised us that, This is not a financial crisis. This is just a temporary moment in time that we will overcome together as a nation and as a world.
After detailing the practical steps he will take, Trump ended by saying that America has tremendous financial resilience, which makes his proposals possible, and incredible human capital. He also urged Americans to put aside partisan differences to provide the most robust response to a temporary, albeit severe, problem.
Within minutes, Democrats and Never Trumpers ignored the Presidents request that the country works together on the problem. Instead, they swung instantly into action, castigating him for doing nothing (even though he acted quickly to restrict travel from China and quarantine travelers) and dreaming of all the horrible things that should happen to Trump and America.
Here are just a few examples of the hysteria and pure hatred that Democrats and NevertTrumpers expressed for Trump and America itself.
The Palmer Report vomited panic, silliness, and hatred:

I thought he was great. He’s amazing.
Paging Captain Obvious...pick up the red courtesy phone...
no the point is he needs to react strongly now while we still can and save the stock market. if i was trolling i’d be saying it’s too late and we should be preparing for senile handsy biden to be president.
Democrats in congress are having the DT’s because they can’t squander money like the good old days before Trump came along.
RE: Im with you. It was delivered terribly.
So, your objection is in the delivery.
What about the STEPS taken? The CONTENT of his speech?
Any objections to what he said instead of how he said it?
No, not really. Though I think the travel ban is too late. As my Dad would have said, the $hits already out of the horse.
I like the SBA provision and I think the payroll tax sounds good but wonder how much impact it will really have.
I saw an interesting article yesterday via twitter about the first point. It was written by an Epidemiologist and Virologist who both said it’s futile to think quarantining can largely stop this now. They based it upon this idea.
China “discovered” this new Coronavirus around 12/16 when they announced the supposed index case. Except at this time, they also announced the RNA sequence of the virus. By sequencing the RNA, that’s the only way to determine if the virus was “new”.
They postulate, given this, that the virus had to have made the zoonotic leap from animal to human in either August or September. So given the amount of time between then and December 16th, imagine how many people travelled from or through China.
Their point was, now we have to stop the spread by self-quarantining but we can’t expect this to not show up around the entire world.
RE: No, not really. Though I think the travel ban is too late. As my Dad would have said, the $hits already out of the horse.
And the alternative is to let more shit come in?
That’s like saying, hey, the house is already filled with water, it’s useless to cover the leak in the roof, just let the rest of the rain come flooding in.
RE: I like the SBA provision and I think the payroll tax sounds good but wonder how much impact it will really have.
And how much impact would NOT having those provisions have on our small businesses?
RE: Their point was, now we have to stop the spread by self-quarantining but we cant expect this to not show up around the entire world.
The point is this — Not one person in the world, not Trump (not a President Joe Biden) is OMNISCIENT enough to know all these details you outlined.
To tell Trump ( or say, a President Joe Biden ) that he “should have” done this in November 2019 is to demand that he have the wisdom and foreknowledge of God.
The issue right now is this — GIVEN WHAT WE KNOW NOW, WHAT SHOULD WE BE DOING TO MINIMIZE the catastrophe?
*THAT* is the issue.
Given this, the question I have for critics is this -— WHAT MORE can Trump do than what he is already doing now? Anything missing?
Yeah, I don’t know the answer to that. I don’t know what’s legal to do/enforce etc. I don’t know what’s been recommended and turned down or not?
Re: SBA and Payroll - To be clear I don’t think the payroll tax cut will have much impact. I think the SBA is an excellent and necessary step.
Regarding the ban on travel, I hear what you’re saying. I guess I’m just weighing the additional hit to the global economy vis a vis the amount of travelers. China, SK, Italy, Iran are already on lock down. I’m not sure banning the rest of the EU (not UK?) is too effective given that that virus has already landed here. But, I guess someone counseled him that it was. Not having all the data makes it hard to judge.
And as we said at the outset, I don’t have any issue with the substance, just the delivery.
I disagree. Humility has nothing to do with leadership. He said needed tone said. Also did not downplay the virus, he was attacking the media and the false accusations they made against him.
What can anyone do? There are limits to what government to do in crises. My prediction is that this thing will be a whole less than feared and when people look at the fear mongering of the Dems and the press - done to sink Trump, not out of any real concern - there will be some real anger.
39 dead now according to Rush in the US. The Wu Flu groupies have consistently over estimated this. Once this all blows over they will of course take credit for the lower than expected toll. Heads I win, tails you lose. What a deal.
