As the novel coronavirus starts to gather speed in Europe, the Middle East and the U.S., theres one place it is seemingly being contained: Singapore.
With no reported virus-related deaths despite 96 cases, and a slowing rate of infection thats been outpaced by recoveries, the Asian city-state is emerging as a litmus test of whether the deadly pathogen can be, if not contained, then neutralized.
The answer is maybe, and perhaps only with the unique combination of factors that Singapore brings: a top-notch health system, draconian tracing and containment measures, and a small population thats largely accepting of governments expansive orders. Few other countries battling an outbreak thats now infected more than 83,000 globally and killed over 2,800, can replicate these circumstances.
Singapores tally of cases is still inching up but its no longer the worst-hit nation outside of China after South Korea saw an over 30-fold increase in a week. Italy, with at least 650 confirmed cases, has now become the epicenter in Europe while Iran has reported an alarming jump in numbers of those infected and dead.
There seems to be more of a willingness to place the community and society needs over individual liberty and that helps in a public health crisis, said Kent Sepkowitz, an infectious disease control specialist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Singapore was aggressive out of the gate and has continued to be. It was one of the first countries to impose restrictions on anyone with recent travel history to China and parts of South Korea. It has a strict hospital and home quarantine regimen for potentially infected patients and is extensively tracing anyone they may have been in contact with.

The ENTIRE purpose of this “pseudo-crisis” IMHO...

I think this graph is highly suspicious and that's what China WANTS us to think. I honestly doubt that's what is really happening on the ground in Wuhan.
It is also hot, there, outdoors.
Granted, lots of people in Singapore are inside, and cool.
But I think the temperature there, is probably significant.
Singapore uses capital punishment, and within the living memory of nearly all of its adults used it a great deal.
Human life is important—but is not of absolute value.
Capital punishment justly used can aid society. I wouldn’t trust many societies to use it, but I think that Singapore serves to demonstrate a society where it works. I’d trust most red states.
I wouldn’t trust Illinois or New York.
Average temperature in Singapore at this time is near 80 Degrees Fahrenheit.
And you can get caned for spitting on the sidewalk.
Isn’t caning still practiced there?
Showing my age, but who can remember the American teen brat that vandalized property and got caned? lol
Cutting down on spitting prevents the spread of germs. If people rarely spit in that society, and the discipline is enforced consistently, who am I to judge?
I was fined two days wages and my insurance will end up going up enough that the overall penalty will be about two weeks wages for not wearing a seatbelt in a situation where there was zero chance of it mattering.
I’d rather be caned, and spitting has more of an impact on others.
Thats why global warming is a good thing!
A small country of Adults not selfish self centered children .
Recall the Ebola nurse in Dallas under house quarantine and riding around town in her bicycle.
People lie and don’t care.

Chinese students trying to go overseas were posting how to evade
Quarantines in Wuhan .
Singapore lives in the real world .
By line says authored by a “bloomberg”. Is that THE Bloomberg and if so, is this an extension of his nanny state oppressive views?
Yeah, I’m wondering if the temperature is a factor in killing off the coronavirus. If true, the closer we get to summer, the less the effect of the coronavirus. It will be interesting to compare the stats of the northern states vs the sunbelt states in the coming months.
