Sanders defends Castro comments in wake of backlash from some Democrats

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is standing by the praise he extended to the late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro in wake of mounting backlash from a contingent of Democratic lawmakers.

Sanders, the leading Democratic presidential candidate, came under heavy criticism on Monday from a swath of Democrats, particularly those representing districts in Florida, after saying in a "60 Minutes" interview that it's "unfair to simply say everything" about the Communist Cuban revolution was bad.

He reiterated those remarks during a CNN Town Hall in South Carolina on Monday night, saying that he's always been critical of authoritarian regimes, but that it doesn't deny the fact that Castro initiated a reading literacy program after coming into power.

“When Fidel Castro first came to power, he initiated a major literacy program. There were a lot of folks in Cuba at that point who were illiterate," Sanders said Monday. "He formed the literacy brigade. [Castro] went out and they helped people learn to read and write. You know what, I think teaching people to read and write is a good thing."

He went on to note that he's been "extremely consistent and critical of all authoritarian regimes all over the world – including Cuba, including Nicaragua, including Saudi Arabia, including China, including Russia."

Asked about the view that it's never appropriate to praise Castro, Sanders grew animated.

"Truth is truth," he said. He then suggested that the Democrats who were speaking out about his comments were publicly endorsing other presidential candidates.

Sanders' comments in the "60 Minutes" interview were met with resounding criticism in Florida, a swing state that is home to hundreds of thousands of Cuban Americans. Several Florida representatives called the remarks "unacceptable"

Sanders should be asked if he think the Cuban revolution was overall a good thing. I'm sure he does, and he is not good at concealing his beliefs.

Castro initiated a reading literacy program after coming into power.

The analogies Trump can use during a debate are endless. Like, planting flowers on a mass grave, etc. This one is going to hurt, during the general, assuming Trump even agrees to a debate, which I can logically see how would take a pass.

Wow, this is strange. Even his political instincts are deserting him. He could at least pretend that he disowns Castro now, and back away from his comments a decade ago, but he apparently still believes in that. He has not evolved on this issue.

This election may do much good for America.

The complete and utter “wrongness” of America’s Left, in world politics of the past 40 years needs a public review. The completely-Left media has never felt so inclined. Now, we can get that review, thanks to Bernie.

Bernie has a long history of being wrong. Wrong on Iran, Nicaragua, Cuba. A huge list. At the time, he could bluster and people couldn’t know the future. Now, we can see how wrong “Professor” Bernie was.

It’s time for the report card, Bernie, and you get a lot of “F”s. the Media wouldn’t do the reporting, but your opposition might.

sanders is too radical for some democrats? He wants to take away our earnings over 29,000 per year. He wants to seize the accumulated wealth of the rich - not all at once, but a portion every year, so that after 10-20 years, it’s all gone.

You have 3 homes, bernie. I have one. FU.
