I’m from Mississippi and there are some strange holdover politics there, Alabama is the same way. I has to do with the civil war and reconstruction. For the longest time everyone was a democrat, few would vote for someone in the party of Lincoln. After Carter screwed the country up so badly voters saw how it took Reagan to fix it and started voting republican on a national level, but local elections remained all democrat. It has long been almost impossible to get elected to any local office if you’re not a democrat. For the most part it has remained that way until recently. Since the democrats have gone so far left with Obama, Pelosi, and the gang people are waking up and saying it just doesn’t make sense for us to be associated with these nutcases. Sanders is the straw that appears to be breaking the camel’s back, even lifelong southern democrats can’t reconcile being in the same party as a communist.
