I made it to Berlin twice. Once, we rode in a van, so we had to go through checkpoints A and B. Those dang Russians were such capitalists. They were trying to sell us all kinds of Russian Army stuff, like belt buckles and other things. . The other time, I rode the troop train from Frankfurt.
I seemed to notice, when we went to East Berlin (in uniform, of course) that the East Berliners seemed afraid of us. My friend said, yes, they are, cuz the Russians told them we would BBQ their children, and try to kill many of them. Evidently, that may have been true. Going to East Berlin was a trip. I remember the sign that said, you are leaving the American sector. I thought we were going right into the belly of the beast. 🤗
