Hmmm... the bioweapons lab is now the first most likely origin.
Most likely, someone took home a lab test animal that they were supposed to kill in order to have a special treat for New Years, caught the virus and spread it while shopping for goodies to serve with their special treat. That would explain how it got out of the lab and Chinese thrown out of Canada for stealing virus samples could well explain where it originated.
Canada, the US, and a dozen other countries including China, are now and for years have been trying to come up with vaccines against flu like viruses. During that process they without a doubt end up with mutations that are worse than the flu they start with. I figure that's what this bug is, someones lab experiment that was never supposed to leave a lab in Canada. It's no where near lethal enough to even be in the running for what the weapons folks want.

The Canadian bio-weapons lab makes Asian targeting virus seems to be gaining a foothold. ChiCom spy in lab gets sample and disappears. Wuhan lab mishandles the sample and virus escapes. Canadian head of lab winds up dead in Kenya where ChiComs have a large construction projects.
