It was 1985. Some Greenpeace sailors were protesting the USSR for continuing to hunt whales. They took a flotilla of protest boats across the Bering Strait, landed in Russia and were promptly arrested.
The State Department deputized the Mayor of Nome to go over and negotiate their release. In my local paper's Saturday edition the headline of this story read, and I quote...
"RELEASE OF SEAMEN EXPECTED"
