Britain is to close its borders to unskilled workers and those who can’t speak English as part of a fundamental overhaul of immigration laws that will end the era of cheap EU labour in factories, warehouses, hotels and restaurants.
Unveiling its Australian-style points system on Wednesday, the government will say it is grasping a unique opportunity to take “full control” of British borders “for the first time in decades” and eliminate the “distortion” caused by EU freedom of movement.

A 10-page briefing document outlining the new immigration policy states:
• UK borders will be closed to non-skilled workers – and all migrants will have to speak English.
• Anyone wanting to come to the UK to work must have a job offer with a salary threshold of £25,600 – though a salary “floor” of £20,480 will be acceptable in special cases where there might have a skills shortage skills, such as in nursing.
• There will be no route for self-employed people coming into the UK, spelling the end to, for example, Polish plumbers or Romanian builders arriving without a job.
• Border control will no longer accept ID cards from countries such as France and Italy. This, it is understood, is an attempt to clamp down on non-EU workers beating the system with forged ID cards.
• The skills threshold for foreign nationals wanting to work in the UK will be lowered from degree to A-levels or their equivalent. The cap on the numbers of skilled workers is being scrapped – and a small number of highly skilled workers will be allowed to come in without a job.
• The right of artists, entertainers, sports people and musicians to enter for performances, competitions and auditions will be retained.

It has the same effect as everyone else. Good news is that the English speaking requirements are practically a given.
In the future I can see free trade deals with the Anglosphere and Commonwealth countries include more preferential and reciprocal visa arrangements as part of the deal.

As a matter of fact, Polack though I may be, I always read a couple of books about Irish history around St. Paddy’s Day, particularly about the Famine and the Easter Rising.

Poland has overtaken India as the most common non-UK country of birth for people living in the UK, Office for National Statistics figures show.
There were an estimated 831,000 Polish-born residents in 2015 - a jump of almost 750,000 compared with the number in 2004, the year the country joined the EU.
The latest net migration figures show a slowdown in the numbers settling in the UK from Poland and seven other former Eastern bloc countries - but that was offset by an increase in net migration from Bulgaria and Romania, which hit record levels of 60,000.

It won’t. The young and mobile Poles will be still be attracted to the UK.
Poles have had a strong connection to the UK since WW2. I met a lot of Poles working illegally in the UK in the ‘90s. Nannies, hotel workers for the women and construction for the guys. I epxect much the same now. The better jobs requiring work permits will be tougher for them to get, I suppose.
Brits...certainly of my generation ...have great respect for the Poles.
Britain entered WW11 when Germany invaded Poland. The Poles were great and brave allies.

Have the same point system in Canada which Trump supposedly wants to copy. I know as im from there and have family members who work for the govt. You have to submit everything from BLOOD ( yup. ) assets, education, properties to show you will not be a burden to the system.
I’d like to see a broader immigration alignment that matches defense and intelligence agreements. Would benefit all involved, but Australia would be the big winner, in terms of acquiring high skilled individuals. Free labor movement throughout UK, US/Canada, and Aus/NZ would be both a relief valve to those in a downturn and a boost to those who aren’t.
Morrison made the right move in Adelaide yesterday, kind of hesitant towards tie up with Italy, but we’ll see. Has great potential.
Poles aren’t parasites.
If it wasn’t for Polish immigrants, there wouldn’t be any Catholics left in Ireland.
Considering the US is so much larger, I would think the others would still want to put a cap on labor from the US.
They let in a bunch of Jamaicans after the war. They proved to be good workers, and greatly helped with the manpower shortages due to the war.
