Bernie Sanders press secretary on Wednesday compared demands for him to release his medical records to the birther smears against former President Barack Obama, drawing strong backlash.
The Democratic Vermont senator, 78, balked earlier this month at releasing his medical records despite suffering a campaign-trail heart attack in October 2019.
Top spokeswoman Briahna Joy Gray doubled down in a CNN interview on Wednesday, insisting that the onus is on Sanders only to be as forthcoming as the rest of the 2020 Democratic field.
I think the American people deserve to know exactly as much as every other candidate has released in this race currently and historically, said Gray.
What youre seeing right now is really reminiscent of some of the kind of smear, kind of skepticism campaigns that have been run against a lot of different candidates in the past, questioning where theyre from, aspects of their lineage, continued Gray, in an apparent reference to birther conspiracy theories that said Obama was born outside the United States.
The comparison drew a swift rebuke from many on social-media.
Asking Sanders to release health records he promised to release in not remotely equal to birtherism, tweeted writer Tim Wise. Sanders HAD a heart attack. Obama was NOT born in Kenya. One is true, the other false. The parallel is absurd and diminishes the racism of the latter.
Added user Amee Vanderpool, Demanding medical records from a 78 year old man who had a heart attack while on the campaign trail is not called Birtherism, its called VETTING.
On CNN, Gray went on to argue that whispers about Sanders health and his refusal to release further records are based in political fear from the right.

Remember when the lefties demanded a press conference about Trump’s health, and then they crucified the doc that said Trump was healthy?

It’s called “pointless.” You don’t need medical records to figure out that odds are about 50-50 at best that a 78-year-old man is going to live 8 more years.
I’m surprised the press hasn’t done any interviews with his baby mama or their love child. Before he married Jane he lived with a woman, Susan Campbell Mott, and they had a son, Levi. Levi actually ran for Congress in NH in 2018 and lost in the primary. His dad has nothing to do with him and didn’t even endorse him for the office. Nice dad.
Obama told us he was born a British subject.
Who believes Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Jay, Monroe, Madison, etc. would have found him to be a natural born citizen?
But I do have a bit of a problem. My dad and his three brothers were born in Wyoming and Idaho to my grandma (born in Iowa) and grandpa (born in Denmark). All were born before my grandpa became a citizen. Only one of the brothers is left, my 101 year old uncle who fought in Burma. None ever set foot in Denmark and never felt any allegiance or connection to it. The idea that they would be ineligible to run for President, just doesn’t seem right to me.
in this case: geezerism
Natural born citizens are born here of citizen parents.
Sorry if it hurts the feelings of those who aren’t.
The children of foreign nationals are precisely who the founders were excluding.
Obama is proof that they were right.
I’ll be honest with you. I have a lot more problem with the fact that Obama spent his formative years in Indonesia hearing “the most beautiful call to prayer” rather than the passport carried by the sperm doner who dumped him and his mother. That’s what made Obama/Sotero “foreign”.
My dad and his brothers grew up in America, in an American home. My granddad applied for citizenship as soon as he was eligible (I think the wait was 7 years). My granddad was foreign born and foreign raised, even though he lived most of his life as an American citizen, he wasn’t ‘natural born’.
I don’t think that most people who study the concept of ‘natural born’ would agree with your idea that my dad and uncles weren’t ‘natural-born American citizens. That, of course, doesn’t make you wrong or me right. On this one we’ll have to agree to disagree. I do see your point, however.
Birtherism LMAO. To this day,America still does not know much about this Obama clown who inexplicably became President.
And what was these turds position on Trump?
What’s Boinie afraid of?
I predict Bernie dead by the end of the year.
I will notify John and Ken on KFI640 radio who have a ghoul pool every year.
