Why do people always make fun of Tacoma (and Fife)?
Likely from the historical "Aroma of Tacoma" which comes from pulp mills, a rendering plant and an oil refinery. It used to be much worse, and could knock a maggot off a gut wagon on a hot day.
I went to high school in Federal Way, late 60's - and we used to play football against Fife, Clover Park, and Puyallup schools.

the stench is still somewhat noticeable near the Puyallup river bridge on I5. maybe wafting in from the port?
