Trump is elevating judges who could gut the Voting Rights Act

WASHINGTON - Fresh from handing President Trump a victory in his impeachment trial, the U.S. Senate has moved to install federal judges who have expressed disdain for the Voting Rights Act, the landmark 1965 law that struck down rules across the South that kept African-Americans from the ballot box.

Overturning voting-rights protections tends to benefit Republicans, who have said states, not the federal government, should decide the particulars of how elections are conducted. Some scholars even believe that weakening the Voting Rights Act ahead of the 2016 election helped Trump win the presidency.

The first of those nominees, Andrew L. Brasher, 38, was formerly the solicitor general of Alabama, a position that allowed him to stake out conservative stances on issues from gun control to reproductive rights. He was confirmed to an Alabama district court last year and, in a rapid elevation, was nominated only months later for a seat on the 11th Circuit court of appeals, which is based in Atlanta. Despite intense opposition by progressive groups, Brasher was confirmed by the full Senate on Feb. 11 in a 52-43 vote.

He is the 188th judge confirmed during Trump’s time in the White House.

Trump has remade federal courts all across the country, but those changes could be especially consequential in the Deep South, where judges helped keep segregation in place, but then later struck segregation down during the civil rights era. Many decades since then, courts have continued to struggle with race, in particular regarding the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which gave the federal government great powers to supervise elections in Southern states that had previously kept African-Americans from voting.

Sounds like the best way for him to stop America’s new banana republic style “elections” dead in their tracks. Our “elections” have become a circus.

Got to get those black voters back on the plantation before November. Rumor has it there’s not one hundred percent loyalty to the Democrat Masters.

And if pigs had wings they ‘could’ fly. Nothing more than baseless fear-mongering.

Apparently Yahoo didn’t get the official Memo from the Supreme Court Justice John Roberts:

There are NO OBAMA Judges, I mean Trump Judges.

Brasher, along with Britt Grant, another youthful 11th Circuit Court of Appeals Trump appointee, will be outstanding candidates for future Supreme Court appointments.

"Some scholars even believe . . ."

Yeah, and some "scholars" believe that a human infant is just a tissue mass or that there are 50+ "sexes".

Screw em', they're paid BS artists, not "scholars". It's irrational to believe that on the one hand you can nullify the votes of the majority of voters in a State by awarding electoral votes to whoever wins the national popular vote despite the majority of voters in the State voting for the other candidate, then turn around and insist that the a Federal voting rights act should override State law and regulations.

IOW, this is just more proof that the democrat scum in this country are not rational and furthermore that they believe the majority of the public is so stupid that they don't realize that the democrat scum are not rational.

All congressional districts should be drawn so that, given the shape of the state and the distribution of its population, the length of district boundary line is as short as practical so as to enclose the proper number of Persons.

This would entirely do away with gerrymandering and result in districts of lumpish shape but not outrageous shapes.

District maps could be drawn by computer capitol building out to stateline and from stateline inward to the capitol building, and then blended to let all districts have about the same level of lumpishness.

Different starting points would produce different maps letting the Legislatures choose the one they like.

The only demographic that should be taken into account ... well, really should be “Citizen” ... but snince they don’t allow that then “Person”.

If there are concerns about representation increase the size of the damn House! Double it at least, though over a number of election cycles.

We should also increase Senators to 3 per State so every two years a Senator is up for election in every State and also so as to not screw up the EC as much.

After the Civil War, the South was under Reconstruction for 10 to 15 years.

My state of Alabama was one if these.

However, the Voting Rights Act has dictated how Alabama does elections for 55 years. That’s one quarter of our time as a state (1819).

My town wanted to expand into a rural area that had grown, in order to give the residents city services such as garbage, natural gas, water, etc. We would also get to vote for the mayor and city council. We are part of a larger school district, so we vote for the school board and superintendent, but not city officials. It was a good thing to offer us the ability to further grow and be represented.

The Voting Rights Act denied this measure. It seems, as this part of the county was more affluent, it was also more white. That wasn’t due to racism, it was just the way things were. No one was denying blacks from living here; it was just that homes were more expensive, with farms and ranches and big acres.

The Voting Rights Act administrator—not from here but Washington, DC—said this expansion would disenfranchise black voters. We couldn’t expand unless we expanded and took over a predominantly black part of an unincorporated part of the county. Well, there wasn’t one. My county is 75% white. We couldn’t gerrymander enough blacks to do the initial expansion.

Frankly, the whole thing was ludicrous, given the demographics of our county. But hey, DC has ruled! You racist have to just deal with it.

I was wondering what the newest OUTRAGE from the Media would be. And ‘the weakening of the Voting Rights act in 2016’?? Wasn’t Obama President then.....and what weakening occurred in 2016??

Truth in labeling would have had this law named the Voting Fraud Act.

Gerrymandering may be the most harmful thing happening to our country. Representatives in many gerrymandered districts have zero incentive to care about the carefully shaped-by-computer minority who have no impact on their re-election.

Cummings district in Maryland is an perfect example. The inner city Baltimore part has enough votes to keep him or his successor in office. The far more conservative parts in 2 surrounding counties do not matter to Cummings votes at all.
