A newborn calf would die in 3-4 days from overdrinking all the milk its mother would produce, and separation within a few hours also reduces the risk of disease transmission to the calf. They must be segregated to prevent the calf from harm. They are reunited after the calf is weaned after 6+ months, and living on a more solid diet.
