I was the head football coach at two high schools for almost ten years in the 50’ and 60’s. I had complete responsibility for the dressing rooms, fields and everything else used in my program. As such I was responsible for whatever any of my athletes did, good or bad. Where the hell were the coaches in this case? Don’t let them off the hook?
I played two years of junior varsity football. Good natured horse play was pretty normal. Damp/wet towels snapped to the buttocks or back of the legs (never to the front), replacing a guys talcum powder with flour (flour cakes talcum doesn’t), changing locks on a locker and that kind of thing.
If anything started to get out of hand the team captains were on it like white on rice.
The coaches were in and out of the locker room and always had their office door open. If things got too loud we would find a coach demanding to know just what in the wide, wide world of sports was going on.
If things got too quiet the same would happen.
A different time.
We didn’t know how good we had it.
