"Old Republicans" were the ones who wanted Ford to be Reagan's running mate/co-president to keep him under control. I wouldn't be surprised if that's how Kristol felt in 1980.

And they got GHW Bush instead, which was arguably a lot worse than Ford. Reagan wanted Paul Laxalt but he had to defer to the GOP establishment in order to guarantee their support.
