"...runs almost exclusively on thorium instead of more volatile uranium" More volatile? Thorium boils at 5063K (8654°F) & Uranium boils at 7468K (12983°F).
Any ideas on the new meaning for volatile?

You don't need a Geiger counter. Back in high school I used to place gas mantles next to photographic film, then develop the film to show the fabric pattern of the mantles.
