The U.S. State Department has placed U.S. diplomatic staff and their families in China on "authorized departure," meaning they are permitted to leave the country amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Driving the news: Approximately 210 U.S. citizens were evacuated Wednesday from Wuhan, where the outbreak began and has spread most widely. The virus has killed at least 171 people in China and infected over 8,000, and was declared a Global Health Emergency on Thursday by the World Health Organization.
A State Department spokesperson told Axios the "authorized departure" notice applied to "all non-emergency U.S. government employees at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing and the consulates general in Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Shenyang."

I dang sure wouldnt have waited around for some bureaucrats permission to get out of there.
Why? China says the mortality rate is super low so

Have we closed off receiving any flights from China??
Nope. Some airlines, the biggest being British Airways, have cancelled flights to and from China.
Took them long enough.
Even the streets of Beijing are turning into ghost towns.
Will these people be quarantined?
No reason to worry .... each can only die once ...
;-)
There must be thousands of tourists from around the world still traveling around parts of China.
You can’t just abandon your post at the embassy.
Now they have permission to leave.
There are currently 8,267 confirmed cases worldwide, including 171 fatalities.
8,139 Of those in China. All deaths are in China only.
128 cases internationally outside of China
I’d imagine the State Department will evacuate as many Chinese as possible, not just American personnel.
That's a little overboard. Where would we put all of China?
Have them shelter in place. We are already seeing it spread here. The time to close this Pandora’s box is running out.
Letting the planes still fly out of China is not how disease are controlled if it is as bad as WHO says it is.
Those people at the airbase in Riverside should stay the there well past the theoretical incubation time.
The ones at March were supposed to stay voluntarily. One decided he/she didn’t want to stay. They quarantined his butt.
Maybe you can’t leave your post but they sure could have sent their family back on day one.
And Chinese touring the world. There’s that cruise liner in Italy with two sick Chinese passengers. The 7000 passengers and crew are quarantined but the health care workers assigned to the ship can come and go. That must mean something along the same lines as the health official 3-4 days ago in Texas who said those students in self isolation (at home/dorm) shouldn’t spend too much time out in crowds. Say, what? I’m sorry, but I must not understand the definition of quarantine.
Excellent points you make and I couldn’t agree more.
There seems to be a nonchalant, casual attitude about this by many.
Something doesn’t smell right.
