But you can't your honor because we have other witnesses who we didn't subpoena because the other side might object that their testimony is irrelevant. The Defense has shown the need for more witnesses.

There's the rub...it's not a trial one thinks of...it's a political proceeding. As Sen Kennedy (R-La) stated, "There are no standards of proof. There are no rules of evidence"...and on top of that, strange rules for a "trial".

This has little to do with any evidence, but more to do with the emotion of charges and how those are presented to the Senators and the public. I don't think the defense focus on procedure and validity of charges is going to win the argument here as it would in a "legal" trial that we have as a reference.
