Russia reversed the award of Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR from the Russian SFSR in 1954, a decision taken by the central government of the USSR, a state which no longer exists.

Ehhhhhh.........what?

Ukraine and Russia were both part of the Soviet Union when Crimea was declared to be part of Ukraine. It did not matter then. I think it was done to satisfy the then USSR dictator. Most of the people in Crimea speak Russian and perhaps do not mind being made part of Russia again.

Regardless, Ukraine asked for help. Obama did not help them militarily. Crimea was gone.

Ukraine and Russia were both members of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Crimea was part of the RSFSR (Russia).

In the 1950s, in recognition of Ukraine’s suffering in the war and for who knows what else, the USSR government took Crimea from Russia and added it to Ukraine.

Back then, all people involved were Soviet citizens first and foremost so the practical effect of the move was little.
