I am pretty sure that a Senator MUST be present to vote.
I am thinking that the language in the Impeachment rules states that 2/3 of “THOSE PRESENT” make up the vote results.
For awhile, there were rumors that Pelosi & other Dems were working on GOP members to NOT be at the trial, and if enough of them were absent, the 2/3 vote could be accomplished by the Dems who WERE there.
That kind of language would cover for a group of Senators who did NOT add up to 100-—due to death & an open seat, etc.
Also- these rules were written LONG before there were 50 states & 100 Senators.....So it had to cover for ‘those present’ in the language
30 GOP senators would have to stay home to allow the math to work.
