Trump suggests he may be open to entitlement cuts in future

Washington – President Donald Trump appeared to suggest in a television interview Wednesday that he’s willing to consider entitlement cuts in the future, a move that would mark a tectonic shift from his stance during his 2016 run for the White House.

Trump suggested he was open to a cut in social safety net benefits, such as Medicare and Social Security, in comments during a CNBC interview on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

While Trump has repeatedly talked up strong economic growth, the federal budget deficit has swollen as his administration has pressed for tax cuts and increased government spending.

Asked if entitlement cuts would ever be on his agenda, Trump responded, “At some point they will be.”

As a candidate for the White House, Trump stood apart from much of the GOP primary field as he vowed to oppose cuts to Social Security and Medicare, while also ensuring every American had health coverage.

In the CNBC interview, Trump called tackling entitlement spending “the easiest of all things” and suggested higher economic growth would make it easier to reduce spending on the programs.

“Well, we’re going – we’re going to look,” Trump said. “We also have assets that we’ve never had. I mean we’ve never had growth like this.”

But remember, we can't afford cuts in overseas military bases, foreign aid or foreign wars. Only programs for senior Americans here at home are "unaffordable."

“Trump has stated over and over he would NEVER touch this stuff, do you believe Trump OR the LYING MEDIA!!!”

He also said he would put jobs for Americans first, but he has become an advocate for importing H1b workers. He said so explicitly to Laura Ingraham in a nationally televised interview two weeks ago. Credit to her, she fought back, reminding him, “You ran on America First.”

I think the impeachment thing - his need to be acquitted in the Senate — has made him beholden to some of the GOP senators who oppose the things he ran on. They’re essentially blackmailing him into giving ground on his MAGA agenda.

“I trust Trump.”

Hope you’re right. I don’t trust any politician. The Bible tells me not to. (Psalm 146)

Spending is outpacing revenue. Until that changes, nothing else matters.

I recall one of the electrician’s that worked for the Military District of Washington was a dedicated Democrat, but he railed against the concept of social security. He was clear in his desire to have his automatic deductions stopped and to be able to invest it in his 401K or a similar plan, because he didn’t trust the government social security program to have any money to pay him or anyone else when he retires in another 10 years.

Well, he’s not a politician by trade. Additionally he seems to be doing a bang up job of being a benevolent leader. 4 more years.

“Spending is outpacing revenue. “

Up until this year, Social Security current yearly contributions exceeded yearly payouts. Even for the next 15 years, the total of yearly contributions plus interest on bonds purchased with past surpluses will, in total exceed payouts.

The claim that Social Security has contributed to recent deficits is a lie.

“4 more years.”

His reelection won’t be made easier if he lets people think he’s going to cut Social Security - something he EXPLICITLY promised not to do when he ran last time.

If he truly hasn’t reversed his 2016 promise, he had better make that clear.

I think if he proposed booting able bodied 30 year olds from receiving SS dollars a groundswell of non leftists would support him. Got to start somewhere.

A DC Democrat who would not object to cutting down or out social security. And he mentioned that he would be able to leave to his family any of the invested money that remained after his death, especially if he died after collecting SS for a year or two...

And medicare? Healthcare costs is a bomb. They are passing it to the next generation via debt. Generational giving of debt should be criminal. The reality is we have been kicking the can down the road for years, and ‘prospering’ because we are helping to fund the economy with vast government spending.
