The Chinese government has quarantined the city of Wuhan and plans to shut down the airport and public transportation within hours amid an outbreak of the coronavirus, according to reports on the countrys social networks. The virus has been linked to at least 17 deaths and has sickened over 500 others.
Other countries' health agencies and governing bodies have issued warnings to travelers including the U.K., which advised against "all but essential travel" to Wuhan, which is where the virus was first detected. Several countries have implemented enhanced screening measures at airports for flights arriving from the Wuhan region as China faces scrutiny over what officials knew about the outbreak and when they discovered it. Deadly contagion in China spreads to the US.
For weeks the country's health officials maintained that the number of people infected remained at 41, with minimal fatalities, but as more cases emerged and the death toll spiked fears of a cover-up began to surface. Top officials in China have reportedly warned lower-level officials to not cover up the spread of the virus, which is now said to be transmissible between humans.

At least China is now taking this seriously, but the cat is already out of the bag.
why do these weird sars or whatever-like viruses originate in china?
This is not going to be well received during the Chinese New Year’s celebration that starts Saturday, January 25.
Just in time before the Chinese New Year this Saturday.
The cat is already on a jet airplane flying all over the globe.
How dangerous is this virus? wow
The horses are gone, better lock the barn door.
China is dirty and polluted... a lot of raw meat & seafood consumption...they need to stop eating cats & dogs over there.
“17 deaths and has sickened over 500 others.”
City of 20 million.
Hyped up scare, always appears with regularity.
Do you really need the answer to that?
Western countries separate the animal pen (feces and earth and all other body fluids), from slaughter. And further separates slaughter from market consumers.
And the people involved in each process rarely have contact. And there are fairly strict regimes and record keeping along the way, along with spot inspections for verification.
In China it’s all mixed together in the same place and there are no inspection, and fewer rules.
China is the perfect soup for zoonotic viral evolution and refinement.
None better could be designed by the best scientists.
UK experts estimate 10,000 are infected, a doubling of 3 days ago.
Currently the virus is killing about 2% of those infected.
Do the math.
Forgive me(?)
Terrible. And while I know diseases like Ebola originate in Congo and whatnot...but I don’t seem to hear the same about other countries, even 3rd world ones...
I could think of lots of factors, lack of basic sewer, sanitation and overcrowding.

= = =
1. Take the population of the United States and quadruple it.
2. Take all those people and cram them all in to the east of the Mississippi River.
3. Fertilize your food with human waste
4. Put the more liberal elements of the New York State legislature in charge of the government.
5. Eliminate food standards and replace them with quotas
Yeah I understand, but i thought China was more developed than that and other than African countries I don’t hear of disease outbreaks *originating* in other poor or poor-ish countries?

So, about 200 people. Chump change in terms of China. They shoot that many political prisoners before 10:00.
???! oh my.
Well I'm sure diseases like this must be rampant in places like India then but I just don't hear about India as a place where global outbreaks are born.
The big issue is the rate of transmission and ease of transmission even though 2% is only about the same fatality rate of the Spanish Flu of 1918.
