A container with 23.94 tons of American chicken feet cleared Chinese customs Tuesday, potentially heralding the start of a new trading era between the two countries just days before they sign a long-awaited trade deal.
The chicken feet, or phoenix claws as theyre known in Chinese recipes, were inspected and approved for unloading by customs in Shanghai, the official Securities Times reported. The event marks the return of U.S. poultry meat to China five years after it was banned, it said.
China prohibited the import of all U.S. poultry products in 2015 in response to cases of avian flu in America. That stance changed last year as demand for alternative animal protein surged after the spread of deadly African swine fever slashed the countrys hog herds and reduced pork supplies.

Chicken feet are delicious.
Besides the media hype, I just dont see much in this trade deal
China will now allow (ie. lower its regularly-used non-tariff political barriers) for things it needs anyway to keep food-price inflation low (soy, chicken, beef, etc...)
They will also permit imports of certain feed and agriculture additives for a few American companies who have good lobbyists in Washington.
Theres no real requirements, only statements of intent.
Trump also seems to have given up nothing.

Who is going to make all of the roller carts so they can panhandle now that they don’t have feet?
“Anyone who eats food imported from China is really rolling the dice.”
What’s wrong with the Sam’s Club Talaipa fish? Human sewage pumped into the fish farms gives it that unique taste.
Sorry--was taking a quick bit of rest from hanging pictures and read hastily. So long as it's a one way street TO China and they don't come back here.
I like em. Kind of bony though.
Chinese cook good rock chicken too.
(frog)
I ordered calamari in China and it was deep fried giant octopus tentacles, unless giant squid have suction cups?
I also tried scorpion...just say no.
A Chinese person demonstrated to me how to eat a chicken head.
No thanks. I did save some face by eating a chicken comb though.
lol....I splain’d that to some yutes that thought the Chinese talaipa was prime fish. One of them went to the ladies room and puked. Good times!
First off, I don’t know where this reporter has been but the US has been the largest exporter of chicken feet to China for many years. China is the world’s largest importer and consumer of chicken feet.
Also chicken feed are found at my supermarket and have been for years, people use them around here because it’s Rural and they like to thicken up their soups and other dishes and chicken feet is the go to resource & works great for that.
For those of us who prefer to grow our own, here’s how to clean and prepare them: http://skillcult.com/food-video-gallery/2016/4/23/how-to-clean-cook-and-eat-delicious-chicken-feet-with-bonus-kung-fu-chicken-foot-technique
I haven’t tried it yet, just like I haven’t tried most of the other organ meats from my chickens. I hope to eventually, but for now the family is squeamish enough already.
I refuse to eat tilapia. People say I’m a snob, but I find it inedible. Some people would eat actual garbage if it was sold by Costco or Trader Joe’s.
I agree.... I often end up going out for dim sum with friends and family and we always order copious amounts of chicken feet.
My TCM doctor/nutritionist wants me to eat liver, so I eat them from good chickens.
Not my cup of tea. Bur to each their own.
Great job Trump.
Just finished lunch but NOW I’m hungry again!
Yep — I make bone broth with them all the time — great collagen & gelatin content. Look quite strange bobbling around in the pot, but good for gut health, joints, hair, nails & skin. I cut the talons off so they’re not quite so creepy!
Wow, the USA makes chicken feet and the ChiComs are cornering the market in 5G. How great is free trade? /sarc
Always check the label on the can. If it shows no country of origin and reads, “Distributed by John Doe Corp” odds are that it was produced in China.
Lot of that going on in discount grocery stores with German sounding names.
We buy Chicken Backs in 40# frozen boxes. We feed them raw to our dogs. They come with the necks attached too sometimes.
It is a lot better for the dogs then ANY dog food you can buy.
after five years at least we’re getting our feet in the door...
