Why? I've always wondered.
I am not a Jew, so I am not the best person to answer, but several things come to mind:
It is necessary to have critical mass to have a school and a synagogue nearby. The synagogue has to be within walking distance for all, as no driving on the Sabbath.
You need a critical mass to provide kosher foodstuffs, so you don't have to live on Hebrew National hotdogs from the local Piggly Wiggly.
Sometimes non-Jews bully Jews, so there is strength in numbers, and numbers also mean you are more likely to get a fair shake from the local authorities.
Culturally, Jews have been known as merchants, artisans, professionals (doctors, lawyers), but not as farmers, or laborers. These fields do better in urban concentrations. You won't find many Jews in U.S. farmlands or mining towns.
I am sure more entries can be added.
