The U.N. General Assembly approved a resolution Friday that will start the process of drafting a new international treaty to combat cybercrime over objections from the European Union, the United States and other countries.
The Russian-drafted resolution was approved by the 193-member world body by a vote of 79-60 with 33 abstentions.
The resolution establishes an expert committee representing all regions of the world to elaborate a comprehensive international convention on countering the use of information and communications technologies for criminal purposes. It says the committee will meet in August 2020 to agree on an outline of its activities.
U.S. deputy ambassador Cherith Norman Chalet told the assembly before the vote that this resolution will undermine international cooperation to combat cyber-crime at a time when enhanced coordination is essential.
There is no consensus among member states on the need or value of drafting a new treaty, she said. It will only serve to stifle global efforts to combat cybercrime.

The UN is a Crime
We need to know how the Nigerians feel about this.
Wow... I sure feel safer now... :(
Will the UN get a cut of the Russian/Chinese Spying ?
“The U.N. General Assembly approved a resolution Friday that will start the process of drafting a new international treaty to combat cybercrime over objections from the European Union, the United States and other countries.”
The United Nations aka United Muslims are like Democrats. Will never advance any cause that doesn’t help their goal of total domination.
It’s OK. They’ll set up the equivalent of a FISA court to protects everybody’s rights.
UN out of the US!
Why are we still in the UN?
They hate us and do everything they can to harm us.
This cybercrime treaty is just censorship in disguise.
If we still have veto power then veto it.
Let me guess: insulting Putin memes will be a far worse crime than running off with a billion dollars from hacking a bank.
What could possibly go wrong?
Americans buying guns online will be considered a cyber-crime and the U.N. will invade your house.
Yawn.
