I always watch out for trees when I hike. They can fail anytime

Also why if possible, the settlers camped in clearings rather than beneath trees.

In hurricanes here in Florida, the wild turkeys come out of the woods and stay in the open during the storm, getting quite wet on the surface [beneath those thick layers of feathers they’re quite dry], and for that reason people think they are stupid enough to drown ... but I have read many reports of such people slain by falling trees or struck by lightning on the golf course or while boating, yet in all my walks in the aftermath of storms, I have yet to find a wild turkey squashed under a fallen log, or fried in anything but a pot.
