Hiker, 28, is killed when 200-foot redwood falls on top of him on national park dirt trail

Subhradeep Dutta, 28, of Edina, Minnesota, was hiking at Muir National Woods Monument north of San Francisco with two other people Tuesday.

Five giant redwood trees suddenly fell while the trio were on a marked dirt trail about 4.30pm, including a 200-foot tree that struck Dutta. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A female hiker also was injured by falling debris and treated at a nearby hospital. A second man was not hurt The trees may have fallen due to wet ground that became soaked after a series of winter storms hit the area in recent weeks, say authorities

Subhradeep Dutta, who is from Edina, Minnesota, was pronounced dead at the scene after he was struck by the tree about 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday, confirmed the Marin County coroner's office and a park spokesman.

The trunk of the tree measured 4-feet in diameter.

I know it knocked me flat, stone cold. But it must have not been a direct strike because I wasn’t killed, or even hurt.

I was once taking the Napali coast trail on Kauai for about the fourth or fifth time and it was POURING RAIN. and I heard this thunderous sound and then I looked up and there was about a 10,000 pound boulder coming right down the hill at me and I guessed and I jumped back about 3 feet and it missed me about one

Boy was THAT a close call

if I’d been wearing headphones who knows what it happened

Bottom line. In nature. KEEP YOUR EYES AJD EARS OPEN !

Napali coast trail on Kauai Is supposed to be a very difficult trek and drop dead gorgeous. Not supposed to go during the rainy season I hear.

"...I jumped back about 3 feet and it missed me about one..."

Isn't that the trail that is about 2 feet wide about 1000 ft atop the sharp ridge?

I was giving my family member a ride downtown. As i was driving we heard this big crack boom.
A sizable tree fell several feet from the tail of the car.
Had i been going about a 1/2 mile and hour slower we would have to crushed.
One of several instance i almost died.

we must ban redwood trees... common sense tells us that no tree needs to be over 30 roundserr, 30 feet high...

Redwood trees regrow in clumps around the stumps of a previous generation. Their root systems are so intertwined that this is not unlikely.

That's Christine Falls in Mt Rainier, WA.

300 level field study course on Geology of National Parks for the win! You don't get that kind of question in Trivial Pursuit.

A couple of years ago, near where I live in Germany, a tree fell over and crushed a car sitting at a red light, killed the driver We take the natural world for granted, but there are many potential hazards out there. I try and be aware of my surroundings, but it is easy to focus on something and not see the hazRd until too late.

RIP Mr. Dutta.

#87: "I lived in Fla many years ago and was walking across a big open field and was struck by lightning."

Wow. Amazing. You are one tough buzzard! I guess God was giving you a wake up call! LOL.

I lived in Central Florida before Disney World or any of that other BS existed. Lightning was what I feared most. Unless someone has lived there, they don't know what lighting is. And the storms come up so fast.

And this was before alligators became a protected species and it was still safe to swim in ponds.

Had what seemed to be a healthy pine limb break off and punch right through 3/4 inch deck planking. Hated to remove it but that pine tree isn't there any more.

Limbs land differently depending on their size and from how high they fall.

A single limb with no smaller branches may just break off and fall in a slow tumble.

However, if the limb/branch has smaller branches, the smaller branches and any leaves/needles will act like arrow fletchings causing the limb to orient straight down in its fall and go into the ground like a spear.

Avoid camping beneath trees. As much as we'd like to stretch some hammocks between our trees, we don't even do that.
