Pennsylvania Democrat's seat switched to 'toss-up' after impeachment vote (IMPEACHMENT HELD HOSTAGE - DAY 7)
Washington Examiner ^ | 12/24/19 | Kerry Picket

Democratic Rep. Matt Cartwright of Pennsylvania, who voted for both articles of impeachment against President Trump, represents a district that now is a toss-up, according to the Cook Political Report.

Cartwright, a four-term lawmaker, is in a district Trump carried in 2016, 53% to 44%.

He won his 2018 reelection by a roughly 10-point margin, with 55% of the vote, easily beating out a wealthy, self-funded GOP challenger. But the Republican primary in his northeastern Pennsylvania district now includes a local wounded military veteran.

**SNIP**

Cartwright attempted to distance himself from impeachment in a USA Today op-ed, claiming he was a “voice of restraint” on impeachment and had been “working with President Donald Trump when our interests have aligned, and we have passed several bills into law together.”

Nevertheless, Granville criticized Cartwright’s impeachment votes, saying, "I think a lot of people in this area are going to be upset over that," adding that he is originally from the district, unlike the congressman, who has not experienced the changes the region has gone through over the years.

The 8th Congressional District of Pennsylvania encompasses Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton and Stroudsburg.

Scranton and Wilkes-Barre are heavily Democratic areas with many retired union members who are faithful Democrats.

Hazleton has been converted to a strong hispanic community despite the work of former mayor Lou Barletta. High crime and many illegals.

Stroudsburg and the Pocono area is filled with NY/NJ transplants who commute into NYC for work, but vote like Democrats.

This is one of those districts that was redrawn by the Soros-stacked Pennsylvania Supreme Court to make it easier for Democrats to win.

“voice of restraint”! WHAT A JOKE!

Every Democrat who voted for this sham "impeachment" should be thrown out of office forthwith.

The Democrat Party--the Party of Hate and Evil, which has championed every evil from slavery and the ku klux klan to infanticide, illegal immigration, coup d'état, voter fraud, and "impeachment"--should be thrown into the garbage dump of history, where it belongs, never to be heard from again--forthwith.

Pelosi led them down the garden path. Swing district Democrats never learn.

Cartright was interviewed on Fox and kept saying in the most phony way possible that he didn’t “want to believe” the charges against our President and then let his mouth drop open in fake astonishment. He is a real piece of work. Thank heavens someone is running against him. The news that he finally has some challengers has been a long time getting out there.

He voted against his constituents anyway. Told them to go f*ck themselves.

For Trump to have won 53% to 44%, many of those Dems must have voted R, at least for the top of the ticket. Hopefully, the Reps will nominate a strong challenger.

If it was so reliably dem it wouldn’t need the PA supreme court to stack it for them

The poconos area loves Trump, tons of Trump signs and tons of Trump voters

Trump has done rallies there in Scranton and of course fills the place easily

This area being a toss up makes sense

Not everyone leaver Jersey is a dem, most are moderates or even conservatives fleeing a high taxed state.

Union workers are no longer a Dem voting block, not when the repub candidate is more pro union/labor then any Dem in the past 50 years.

The Dem has a lot to worry

If they nominate a charismatic pro Trump candidate, they will win this district

If it is just anther RINO/Never Trumper piece of crap, they will just stay with their current Never Trumper piece of crap.

Trump won the district in 2016 before it was redrawn in 2018.

Comparing apples to oranges.

The legally drawn districts diluted the Democrat bases.

The PA Supreme Court (funded by Soros) drew districts to give Democrats 2 more seats in Pennsylvania's Congressional Delegation.

It is still almost 11 months until the election. Dynamics can change quickly and the desperate, hate-filled Democrats are full of dirty tricks.

Therefore it is irrelevant to compare 2016 results to 2018 results.

Hate it when the talking heads do that but they do it all the time.

Perhaps and yet the redrawn district is STILL considered a tossup. I would say this highlights the strength of Trump.

Thanks for the analysis.

So, is it possible that this district is truly a toss-up?

Not arguing that they won’t do anything, we all know they will

However, will it even work?

I mean they pounded for 3 years that Trump is worse then Hitler, you can’t get any worse then that, and he still polling better then anyone in their clown show

Where do you go for from there?

Seriously, people say their are 2 things guaranteed in life, death and taxes, but I think their is a third thing, the “Left ALWAYS over play their hand”

“Therefore it is irrelevant to compare 2016 results to 2018 results.”

Hillary was very unpopular up there due to Trump’s inroads with the unions & Democrat brain-dead energy policies. They have themselves convinced that because Biden was born up there that he will do better.

Cook has the district as R+1. In 2018, Cartwright won the newly configured district by 9 points. Will his impeachment vote be enough to defeat him? When you look at his stance on the issues like abortion and immigration, Cartwright tries to have it both ways portraying himself as a moderate but supporting Dem policies. He even supports cap and trade.

He is personally pro-life but supports abortion. He is against amnesty but supports a path to citizenship. Hopefully his Rep opponent will exploit those issues.

I grew up in NY across the Delaware river from Matamoras. I could walk into Pike County. The region is generally conservative. I was a big supporter of Lou Barletta.

The Reps need a big turnout and a good candidate. Agree it is apples and oranges due to redistricting. Trump’s performance in 2016 is not indicative of what will happen in 2020. Cartwright will be hard to beat. His 2018 performance in the new district is a better indicator of how he will perform in 2020. Impeachment is the wild card along with the Dem at the top of the ticket.
