Democrat politicians often turn left after they leave office, and like a lot of politicians Obama was always conflicted - there was his political self which operated in the realm of the possible, and his ideological self which dreamed of major changes and provocative stands. But this may be more about Joe not being up to the job.

I never believed the "Obama's backing Harris" stories, but if Kamala were still in the race and polling well, she might have been his candidate. Is he really backing Liz, though? I wouldn't be entirely surprised if he met with Buttigieg or Klobuchar. If you have influence, you wait for when it can count. You don't commit yourself too early and waste that influence.

Anyone remember the movie The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training? At the beginning of the film, the team is planning a road trip to play a team in Houston but they lack a coach or any adult supervisor. As a result, they a near-imbecile old groundskeeper to pose as their coach and convince their parents that the moron will chaperone the trip.
