Watched a show on how moonshiners became the precursors to NASCAR years ago. They were outrunning the “revenuers”.
A lot of Scots settled in the mountains of VA, NC, KY and TN starting in the 1700’s and knew a bit about distilling alcohol.
I had a neighbor (Country Neighbor) in the early 60s who made moonshine. This was in the Florida Panhandle.
Their still was inside a cave with a tiny spring in it. I don’t think they were ever caught. Actually, I don’t think he even sold it.
Otis Campbell (of Clan Campbell and Mayberry, NC) was one of their best customers too.
