Mind you, I have no animus against the Germans. Against the childless Frau Merkel's designs for the demographic transformation of Europe, yes, but against the Germans per se, no. But Germany is naturally the dominant state in Europe, and without the UK in the EU, there will be no effective counterweight. The other northern European countries are too small, and the southern European countries are basically noncompetitive.
Agreed ... but bring back a constitutional monarchy.
There are still Hohenzollern descendants who I have no doubt would be ready to assume the ceremonial duties of a royal head of state.
I read somewhere a couple years ago that there is a small group of Bundeswehr soldiers who voluntarily stand guard by the tomb of Kaiser Wilhelm in their off-duty time.
And don’t write off the House of Windsor just because of Andrew. Sometimes, qualities skip a generation — and it appears Will and Kate have a lot of Queen Elizabeth’s solid virtues. No mean trick being a grandmother figure to an entire nation.
