IF you are an American and mispronouncing it. If you are over there - it's not pronounced that way.

In 1972 you had zero exposure to the world and you didn't know, perhaps, how a Ukrainian pronounced the name of their own city. Go there and call it "Key-ev" - and see what kind of reception you get.

But here it is. There is nothing wrong with Anglicized words.

In the States we do not pronounce Berlin "Bare Lean".

I prefer the Russian pronunciation of KEE-yev. It is more historically accurate pronunciation and the best prediction of how it will be pronounced again in the near future. Ukraine has been an independent nation so little in the last seven hundred years that it simply isn't worth the time to learn the nuances of the local dialects.
