As for the State Department being a den of snakes and vermin, we can thank FDR for that. He infused the State Department with socialist apparatchiks, and they bred like the insects they are.
I think the net effect of this whole thing is that the world is getting an inside look into how US diplomacy works.
And that is not a good thing. A world of sausage lovers are getting an in-depth tour of a sausage making factory and how sausage is made.
They may never eat sausage again.
