How many times has this been said and then proven wrong?
His mouth is the reason for his success. His words are designed to provoke the Left into doubling down on bad strategies. Using this technique, he has framed the debate on countless issues with the result that the Democrats publicly strike an unpopular political position, leaving the President with the popular one.
An example:
1) By saying “outrageous” things about the rapists and murderers flooding across the border, candidate Trump seemingly left himself wide open to the accusation that he is a racist and a xenophobe, and that he believes brown people are rapists and murderers. A lot of people here expressed the “concern” then, that his mouth would be his undoing.
What really happened? The Democrats, who had in the past taken reasonable positions on border security in defense of American union workers, and against wealthy corporations exploiting cheap labor, suddenly shifted gears and adopted extreme open borders positions, because they thought by doing so they could hang Trump out to dry for racism and xenophobia. They were eager to take the opposite position of whatever he said, in order to differentiate themselves and signal their virtue and demonstrate their non-racism.
Trump knew they would react this way and purposely tweeted to trigger this reaction - with the result that now they have to run their campaigns on an extreme open borders platform which is very unpopular with the American people. Meanwhile, Trump gets to run on the populist side of the issue, and gets to peel off union workers, anti corporation liberals and other demographics who typically voted with the Democrats.
He has used the same strategy with China trade, America First, bringing troops home, gun control, religious freedom, tax policy - you name it. He strikes a smart political position - but in a provocative and politically incorrect way - causing the Democrats to scurry to take the opposite position to prove him wrong. If he wants to bring troops home, they say we shouldn’t! If he says America First, they say America last! He has cultivated this polarized relationship on purpose to bait them into political traps.
And it always starts with him “mouthing off” in tweets - and there are always people on FR saying it will be his undoing.

He has them right where he wants them. They’re trapped, not him.
