I think because the MSM already had their talking points (Pubbies mean, make old lady cry) and they messed up their whole plan.
It obviously has nothing to do with substance so they are trying to drum up, feelings, drama, hysteria. They wanted compassion for the traitorous Itch because she was fired and Trump is Mean and then the GOP savaged her and made her cry.
