Yep. I went to school at SUNY Farmingdale. My dad’s chemical company made machining fluids for Grumman and the machine shops in the area doing their subcontracting work when they were developing the F14 Tomcat. Ding - ding - ding! We have a winner! Every "contributor", despite which network - gets paid union scale (at minimum).
Back in the early 90s when yours truly had a similar talk radio gig (on the conservative side, riding Rush's coat-tails) it was around $300 for the first 15 minutes (whether you were on mic/camera 30 seconds or the full 15 mins) and then it bumps in intervals of 5 or 10 minutes - I really don't recall all the contract details - bottom line, when they hold someone over a commercial break (whether James Carvel or Mr. Newt), if they go 1 second past the cut-off, the money just about doubles.
The "bargaining" rates have certainly gone up since then. I never got the full pop because I had to purchase a "union waiver". I refused to join AFTRA or SAG and pay dues (they had yet to merge in those days) so the waiver was deducted from the fee (along with a laundry list of taxes, administrative and license fees, etc.) All "major" media (Movies, TV and radio) are run by the unions - so yes, every talking head is being paid at least the minimum, and most, like Dan, Newt or this Hahn moron "negotiate" even higher fees (which supposedly goes to agents, publicists and what-have-you) and there's usually a "book and/or public appearance" clause to plug whatever you're selling (from web URLs to T-shirts) ... So just sign here, talk for 5 minutes, pimp your merchandise and walk away with half a grand. It's not a bad day's pay and with any luck you "make the rounds" and "stack" several shows a day like Hahn. It doesn't matter what's said (although this creep recites DNC talking points and drinks the Cool-aide), it's all about the payday.
