Well if that’s true, perhaps McConnell keeps the thing in limbo until November 2020.
I don’t know why not, either - but if not, why couldn’t the Senate just preemptively find Mr. Trump “Not guilty” by a majority vote? A 2/3 vote is necessary for conviction - an absolute majority against conviction should dispose of the issue.

Isn’t it normal, after all, for a criminal defense to respond to the prosecution’s case initially by asking the judge to declare that the prosecution is defective and the defendant must be released?
