THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

RICHARD RODGERS

JUMBO

This was a Broadway musical produced by Billy Rose with music and lyrics by Rodgers and Hart and a book by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. It opened at the Hippodrome Theater in November 1935 and closed in April 1936 after 233 performances. It starred Jimmy Durante and a number of circus acts. The musical told the story of a financially strapped circus. At the end of each performance, Durante would lay down on stage while an elephant placed its foot on his head. The 5000 seat theater was turned into a circus tent where the various acts performed during the show.

”LITTLE GIRL BLUE”

This is Sassy from 1956 backed by Hal Mooney. The Divine One soars in this interpretation.
