A white Fort Worth officer fatally shot a black woman inside her home early Saturday after police were called to the house to do a welfare check, according to police and the neighbor who called them.
The woman who was killed was Atatiana Jefferson, 28, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiners Office.
Police released a statement Saturday afternoon saying officers responded at 2:25 a.m. to a report the front door of a home was open in the 1200 block of East Allen Avenue. James Smith, who called a non-emergency police number, said he saw the doors were open and the lights were on, which struck him as unusual. He knew Jefferson, his neighbor, was home with her 8-year-old nephew.
Police parked around the corner, so the woman couldnt see them, according to Smith, 62. About 15 minutes later, he said, he heard a loud bang and saw several more officers rush inside.
Body camera video released by police on Saturday shows two police officers using flashlights to check the perimeter of the home, inspecting multiple doors that are open with a screen door closed. In the back of home, one officer appears to see a figure through a dark window, and he quickly twists his body to the left.
Put your hands up! Show me your hands! he shouts through the window, his gun drawn. He then fires a single shot through the window.
He does not identify himself as a police officer in the video.
Police said in the statement that the officer, who joined the department in April 2018, saw a person standing inside the home near a window.
Perceiving a threat, the officer drew his duty weapon and fired one shot striking the person inside the residence, the statement said.

I was 500 miles away when I had to call for a welfare check on my elderly mom.
They didn't shoot her. In your opinion, should they have, since I wasn't there?
Yes you did , and I agree, It was SWAT tactics like on a drug house.
... saw a person standing inside the home near a window.
Apparently she did not respect his authority.
Reading through the entire story there have been eight (8) police shootings since June, ON THAT STREET. East Street, FT. WORTH.
These cases sound like Very nervous, jittery cops, not experienced or poorly trained, but definitely No Confidence behaviors are apparent.
Finally a nice day in Texas when you can enjoy the weather.
Open your doors to get some fresh air.
Get shot by the police....
Only reason she might get post-death justice is because cops killed a woman.
I agree 100%. Been saying this for years.
Yeah, I just closed the door. So much for enjoying the cooler weather.
Not East Street.
I really like my local police, really I do. I know them pretty well, and they are not gun-slinging hotheads.
That said, there’s a lot of truth in the saying “there are few situations so bad they can’t be made worse by the addition of a cop.” As situations like this one show us.
Before you call the cops, make sure you *really* need them.
Michael Brown was a good shoot, and no, you are not.
This is some messed up story. They are called for a welfare check, a cop looks through the window, sees a person and just hauls off and shoots her dead? Is that what happened? Because that sounds pretty messed up to me.
I feel the same way about the cops and sherrifs in my town and about calling them. Pretty much only if legally required to.
“They didn’t shoot her.” Glad to hear that!
Thanks. I totally missed that.
He wont be given one. He was there on an official call, which gave him the license to shoot any person or dog who got in his way. At most, hell be fired and turn up on another force in a different state in a year.
Me too! She’d outlived nearly all her friends, and the two remaining English speaking neighbors were out of town.
Dr. Clarissa Cole on After Hours AM April 17, 2019
Eric Olsen: So when theyd leave would they go to a different state and do it?
Dr. Cole: Hah no, they would get hired by different a county, like a couple minutes over usually. Somebody knew them and Now lets pick them up. No, no, no, he has really strong sadistic tendencies and fantasies of rape and murder, you really shouldnt hire him and they would. And thats exactly, I hope its different that was like I said, this was in 2005, it scared the heck out of me and I said I would never have a career doing that I dont want to know that those people are becoming officers.
Eric Olsen: Tell me its in the minority, though, that this happens.
Dr. Cole: Its in the minority that people fail, the majority of people passed. But those that do fail, like I said its for very good reason, but half of them. Half of them got picked up. So no, its not a minority a full 50% got hired.
Eric Olsen: That is truly a scary number out there that 50% of...
Dr. Cole: Its a small sample, a small sample that was in a place that was economically depressed and needed officers
I saw/heard the same.
O/T, but WHY was there a welfare check called in?
Was this woman a known menace in the neighborhood?
I didn't see an account of just why the cops were called in the first place.
