You can draw the start up of the Revolutionary War to two key factors. First, from 1609 to 1774....various Indian wars were fought, which required the King’s ‘men’. Thousands were sent over during this period and participated in defeating the Indians. All of this however....had a price-tag attached, for the King’s ‘men’.

So the second issue, which you are correct on...taxation that started to increase in the 1760-1770 period.

If expansion had been controlled or limited, the Indian wars would have lessened, and the need for Army troops would have lessen as well.

Please read the Declaration of Independence. It lists all the reasons and grievances necessitating American independence. Taxation was only a small part. And it wasn’t even the tax itself, it was the foreign administration of taxes being a departure from the historical precedent.
