The article said they "were shown other evidence the Italians had on Mifsud." Sounds like Mifsud wanted into something like our "witness protection program", and in return, he gave up some info.
As for why Barr and Durham, at this point, they might not have anyone that they can trust. Or maybe the Italians no longer trust FBI/CIA. It all sounds like something out of a Tom Clancy novel.

YOu have unrealistic expectations. The Deep State is fighting Trump every step of the way and Barr is doing things legally, the Deep State does not. Barr’s only been on the job a year, Durham even less. You either Trust Trump and Barr or you don’t. Please just stop acting like a spoiled child and expecting everything to be done as you want. It doesn’t work that way, Barr will make his move when he’s ready, he doesn’t give a crap what you think or want.
