> Well, if you were a betting man, then you would realize that not a single President has ever been successfully impeached since the countrys founding. <
Right. But lets take a closer look. Neither Andrew Johnson nor Bill Clinton did anything that threatened the structure of the Republic. So neither man should have been impeached in the first place, IMHO. (And yes, I know that Bill Clinton behaved like a pig, and then lied about it.)
On the other hand, Nixon was accused of things that really threatened the structure of the Republic. And he resigned because he knew he would have been impeached, and then convicted. GOP senator Hugh Scott told him as much.
Trump finds himself in the same position as was Nixon, accused of doing things that threaten the Republic. The only difference is that Nixon probably was guilty. Trump is not guilty. But the Democrats dont care about that.
I disagree with your assessment of Andrew Johnson. Also, structure of the Republic was in an extremely precarious position at that point in time.
And I am reassessing my position on President Nixon given what I have learned over the past umpteen years. I no longer believe that he should have been forced from office.
President Clinton was a huge threat to the Republic. So yes, he should have been impeached and removed. He was very guilty and he had committed crimes.
What we are dealing with today is the continuing corruption from the Clinton era in the democrat party.
“Neither Andrew Johnson nor Bill Clinton did anything that threatened the structure of the Republic. So neither man should have been impeached in the first place, IMHO. (And yes, I know that Bill Clinton behaved like a pig, and then lied about it.)”
But threatening the structure of the country is not the criteria. It’s high crimes and misdemeanors. I consider the felony of perjury impeachable as a high crime. A felony is a high crime.
“On the other hand, Nixon was accused of things that really threatened the structure of the Republic. And he resigned because he knew he would have been impeached, and then convicted. GOP senator Hugh Scott told him as much.”
Yes, I hear that too. However, Nixon was way smarter than Clinton and had a far better defense ready. He didn’t commit a felony. He could have been gotten for ‘obstruction of justice’ but was less guilty than Clinton of that. I think his resignation was for the good of the country. Ford should have defeated Carter.
What did Nixon do that threatened the country?
