The (D)'s need to understand this threat of discovery in any Senate trial. They need to know this is a real possibility, especially if Barr & Durham do not produce actionable results in the next few months.
If Barr & Durham strike out, a trial in the Senate with discovery really is the last hope of holding the coup plotters to account.
Has any person in the media,or even a Republican politician, asked exactly what do the Dems mean by an impeachment “inquiry.” I don’t think that anything with that name exists in the law. We know it’s just a reason to keep attacking Trump in the media. LIVers will hear only “impeach.”
An impeachment trial in the Senate has zero possibility of "holding the coup plotters to account".
The Democrats will not file formal charges of impeachment until they believe that they have turned enough Republican Senators to guarantee a conviction. They are working on that now. If there is a "trial" the fix will already be in on the verdict. The nature of the charges will be completely irrelevant, as will any consideration of guilt or innocence.
There is still time to prevent a formal impeachment. The critical factor is to convince the Republican Senators that they can only lose from an impeachment trial and the Democrats will discard them promptly if they can obtain a conviction. No promises from the Democrats will ever be kept in this matter, and the Senator's political career and personal wealth will come to an end if President Trump is removed.
And if the "trial" takes place anyway - we will have taken the next unmistakable step toward hot civil war.
