President Trump said late Wednesday that his administration would issue a notice of environmental violation against the city of San Francisco because of what he described as its homelessness problem.

Traveling aboard Air Force One as he returned to Washington from a three-day trip to California and New Mexico, Mr. Trump told reporters that San Francisco was in “total violation” of environmental rules because of used needles that were ending up in the ocean.

“They’re in total violation — we’re going to be giving them a notice very soon,” the president said, indicating that the city could be put on notice by the Environmental Protection Agency within a week that its homelessness problem was causing environmental damage.

Liberal Austin, TX is not happy with it’s mayor who is letting homeless camp out an anyone’s doorstep they want and placing 10 drinking fountains downtown at the tune of $1 million. Uber lib Univ. of TX got all hyper and screeched they couldn’t camp out on the west campus. Good for thee mu not for me. Maybe Trump can start handing out a bunch of those violations.

That’s funny. I live in a town that is on lake Huron. The EPA mandated that our storm drains and residential sewers be separated at great cost some years ago. The stated reason was to reduce pollution from the storm drains getting into the lake. When atorms hit the system was overwhelmed, resulting in raw sewage being dumped into the lake. San Fran is still sending storm sewage into the bay? How the hell do they get away with that?

The politicians in San Francisco have a very caviler attitude about damaging the environment. Love it.

There were happy when they voted for it. They are not happy now that reality is sleeping, pooping and yelling obscenities on their doorsteps.

Why go after needles when you can go after fecal material all over the place? That has to violate a thousand EPA rules for total fecal coliform (including fecal coliform and E. Coli), cryptosporidium, giardia lamblia, and enteric viruses. That material simply HAS to be getting into the drinking water supply or being spread by foot traffic all over the place and getting onto surfaces that people touch every single day.

Trump is missing the big opportunity to after the most egregious, most disgusting and most dangerous fouling of San Francisco public spaces.

If you ever visit San Fran, you've noticed that the "aromas" wafting up from the city street grates stinks like sewage. That's because San Francisco uses a "Combined Sewer," the only coastal city in California to do so. A combined sewer system collects and treats both wastewater and stormwater in the same network of pipes. Water flows through most of the sewers using gravity. Stormwater enters the combined sewer system through building roof drains or the catch basins along the street and gets treated at city plants just like the wastewater that goes down your household drain.

When I first moved to SF in the summer of 1973, the stench arising from city street grates just sickened me. It is so gross.

See San Francisco Water, Power, and Sewer Our Combined Sewer.

Here's a cute little cartoon that shows how innocent and simple this design approach is...in theory:

What it doesn't show is those pedestrians gagging and passing out from the noxious fumes arising from the city street grates.

Remember the lyric line from a 1970s popular song?

“If you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.”

Just like the line from Ring Around the Rosy about posies in the pocket (about the plague in Europe), the flowers were meant to offset the horrible stench.
